Best Wet Weather Driving Safety Tips for Spring

Spring has arrived in Milwaukee!  That brings new seasonal driving challenges. These seasonal driving conditions can be treacherous this time of year. From poor visibility to water-filled potholes, one wrong turn can leave even the most experienced driver in a panic. Each year, wet pavement is a contributing factor to over 1.2 million car crashes.

Before You Leave Home

1. Check wiper blades. A winter’s worth of snow, ice and salt can beat down the wipers, so you may need to replace those, too. Also, clean your windshield with good window washer to improve wiper performance. 
2. Maintain proper tire air pressure. During the winter months, tires lose air due to the cold temperatures, causing tires to be underinflated. Warmer temperatures can cause tires to be overinflated. 

On the Road

1. Watch for pedestrians on the move. As temperatures increase, more people are outside walking or bicycling with their families. Slow down in your neighborhood and pay extra attention at crosswalks. If pedestrians have the walk signal, they have the right of way. 
2. Skip cruise control. On a dry day, cruise control is a perfectly safe and lovely thing to use. On wet and rainy days, the chances of losing control of the vehicle are greater. 
3. Slow down for spring showers. Did you know that roads are the most slippery when it first begins to rain? This is caused by the rainwater mixing with contaminants on the road, such as oil and grease.
4. Be on the lookout for potholes. Extreme winter weather takes a toll on our roadways, creating large potholes. Heavy rain can fill them with water making them difficult to see.
5. Respond to hydroplaning. If your tires are worn and the tread depth is below 2 millimeters, you may experience hydroplaning, especially at higher speeds or in deep water. 
6. Watch for animals on the move. Animal activity increases during the spring. For some, this is mating season and for others, they’re waking up from their long winter slumber. 

The biggest factor when driving in wet-weather is you and your judgment. If visibility drops and the roads suddenly become challenging, only you will know if it is time to pull off and wait it out. It may take you a bit longer to reach your destination, but in the end, the few minutes spent to be safe will always be worth it.
